Garage fire in St. Leonard destroys cars

Friday, Dec. 25, 2009

Three vehicles, estimated at $270,000 in value, were destroyed in a St. Leonard garage fire last week.

The fire, which was deemed accidental, burned a Ford Mustang that had been customized as a race car, a 1972 Ford Mustang classic and a Chrysler PT Cruiser, along with motors and car parts, said Maryland Deputy Fire Marshal Sander Cohen.

"He was really into cars," Cohen said of the owner, Timmy Watts.

The fire, which started in a detached garage on Flag Harbor Boulevard in St. Leonard, was investigated on the morning of Dec. 17.

It was determined that "an electrical event occurred," Cohen said.

The garage, with an estimated loss of $8,000, was completely destroyed, he said.

According to the investigation report, it took 30 minutes for 30 firefighters from St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, Solomons, Benedict and Huntingtown volunteer fire departments to control the fire.

Along with Cohen, deputy fire marshals John Nelson and Cary Moreland responded to the investigation.
