A Mechanicsville area man died Saturday when the car he was riding in as a passenger crashed into a tree along New Market Turner Road, according to law officers reporting that two teenagers also in the vehicle were flown to hospitals.
Thomas Edward Douglass, 63, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1 p.m. crash, after St. Mary’s sheriff’s deputies arrived at the roadway's intersection with Rustin Family Way, a sheriff's office release states, and located the 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by 18-year-old Avery Leslie Stokes of Indian Head. Stokes' front seat passenger was identified by the sheriff's office as Alexandra Catherine Howard, 18, of Mechanicsville, and Douglass was a rear seat passenger.
The eastbound car, "for unknown reasons … crossed the centerline, overcorrected and left the roadway striking a tree," according to the release from the preliminary investigation, stating that "at this time, driver error and lack of seatbelt usage appear to be contributing factors in the fatal collision."
An off-duty law officer found two of the occupants trapped in the car, Mechanicsville volunteer firefighters noted in an online report, identifying the driver as one of the people who had to be extricated.
The sheriff's office has requested that anyone who may have witnessed the collision or any events leading to the collision contact Cpl. Brandon Foor by calling 301-475-4200, ext. *2265, or by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
