The Leonardtown Lions and Friends Christmas Caring program was a great success again this year. Thank you to all those who donated time and gifts, and to those who helped with moving and delivery of the toys to the children’s homes. In cooperation with the Leonardtown Lions, ACE Hardware Store (Sneade’s), St. Mary’s Ryken High School, and the St. Mary’s County offices, a merry Christmas was provided to 91 children in our community.

Many thanks to Leonardtown Lions Don and Theresa Fincham for all of their hard work to make this event possible.

DNR announces deer hunting reminders

The January firearm deer hunting season opens today, Jan. 8, in Deer Management Region B, which includes all of Maryland except the westernmost counties.

Hunters with a valid hunting license may use firearms to harvest sika and white-tailed deer during this season.

The season is open January 8-9 in all of Region B; the season is open Sunday, Jan. 10 on private and designated public lands in Cecil and St. Mary’s counties and on private land only in Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, Washington and Worcester counties.

Maryland hunters are encouraged to donate any extra deer they may harvest; and may claim a tax credit of up to $50 for each legally harvested deer that is processed and donated to a nonprofit food-sharing program.

The maximum credit in any one tax year is $200 per hunter.

Recipe of the Week

Marcie’s Tuna-Macaroni Salad

From the recipe files of Marcelline Davis

Yield: 10-12 servings

Ingredients

1 16-ounce box small shells macaroni, cooked according to package, drained, cooled and chilled

2 eggs, hardboiled, shelled and cut up

1 large yellow or white onion, chopped

6 to 8 mini gherkin pickles, chopped

1 15-ounce can of peas, drained, or 8 ounces frozen peas, cooked according to package directions, then drained and cooled

2 6-ounce cans solid white tuna, drained and flaked

2 cups mayonnaise (more to taste; sometimes I also add in a little bit of Ranch-style dressing, to taste)

Salt and pepper to taste.

Directions: Gently mix in a medium-sized bowl the eggs, onion, pickles, peas, tuna, mayonnaise and seasonings. In a large bowl, add wet ingredients to macaroni; stir, then chill well. This salad is great as an entrée or as a side dish. This is my husband’s favorite recipe, passed down from his mom Marcelline.
