St. Mary’s County government is headed by five elected county commissioners, one of six counties in Maryland still using the commissioner form of government. Voters in November 2016 chose by a 60 percent margin to keep the commissioner form of government rather than changing to code home rule.

Walden, a nonprofit organization located in St. Mary’s County for more than 40 years, contributes to the wellbeing of Southern Maryland by providing a comprehensive array of crisis, behavioral health, trauma and recovery services dedicated to bringing “Help for today. Hope for tomorrow.”

The volunteer fire departments and emergency medical services in St. Mary’s provide fire and ambulance service to the community day and night for no pay. Auxiliaries at the fire departments and rescue squads help raise funds and support.
