MedStar St. Mary's Hospital, nonprofit hospital in Leonardtown, is a full-service facility delivering emergency, acute inpatient and outpatient care.
MedStar St. Mary's is focused on providing the Southern Maryland community with close access to primary and specialty health care. Following its 2009 merger with MedStar Health, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has been able to recruit new physicians and specialists to the area and has expanded services in radiology, orthopedics, vascular and colorectal surgery, oncology, women’s care, breast health and pediatrics, among other areas.
In addition, as a member of the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is closely aligned with MedStar Washington Hospital Center, one of the most advanced cardiac care centers in the region, and the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic. The hospital’s Intensive Care Center also provides Maryland eCare, an electronic monitoring technology that complements local care by utilizing critical-care physicians and nurses based at the University of Maryland Medical Center, linked through a monitoring center.

The hospital’s radiology group is comprised of subspecialty and fellowship-trained radiologists staffed by MedStar Medical Group Radiology. The group brings expertise in interventional radiology and nuclear medicine and has expanded the array of services offered at the hospital.
Cancer Care & Infusion Services
Cancer Care & Infusion Services is an ambulatory clinic providing biotherapy and chemotherapy administration, transfusions, venous access device management and intravenous hydration and antibiotics. The hospital employs a tumor registrar, whose role is to identify, register and maintain records for county cancer patients, as well as a navigator to guide patients through cancer care.
Wound Healing Center
The MedStar St. Mary’s Wound Healing Center opened in 2013, and is a member of the Healogics network. The center houses two hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers and offers the latest technologies to help care for people with chronic, non-healing wounds caused by conditions such as venous stasis, diabetes, burns, radiation therapy or post-surgical wounds.
Grace Anne Dorney Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center
MedStar St. Mary's opened The Grace Anne Dorney Pulmonary and Cardiac Rehabilitation Center in 2010 with a gift from Dorney's husband, news broadcaster Ted Koppel. The center provides trained staff and workout equipment to help anyone experiencing heart and lung conditions expand their respiratory functions. The center also offers MedFit, a health and wellness program for individuals who want to lower health risk factors.
Women's Health & Family Birthing Center
The Women's Health & Family Birthing Center features five birthing rooms, along with a jacuzzi room and 12 private single-patient postpartum suites and an antepartum testing room. The facility offers skilled, high-risk prenatal care with a direct telemedicine link to specialists at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Newborns requiring a neonatal consultation can receive an immediate diagnosis via a second link to Children's National Medical Center.
Outpatient services in pavilion
Completed in 2011, the Outpatient Pavilion provides a comfortable and accessible space for a variety of outpatient services including imaging, specialty physicians, a laboratory center and Cancer Care & Infusion Services. Located within the imaging suite is the hospital’s Women's Health Services, offering a private changing and waiting area, mammography, bone densitometry and ultrasound for female patients. The Outpatient Pavilion’s second floor houses specialists such as orthopedic surgeons, a vascular surgeon with the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute, a colorectal surgeon with MedStar Washington Hospital Center and a general surgeon.
Health Connections is the community health and education department of MedStar St. Mary's Hospital. Programs are offered in the Outpatient Pavilion and in the community. Health Connections offers workplace wellness programming and community leadership in health-focused coalitions aimed at improving the overall health of the community. Programs offered through Health Connections include chronic disease self-management programs; Living Well With Chronic Conditions; Cancer Thriving and Surviving; Simple Changes — National Diabetes Self-Management Program; Seven Healthy Habits of People Living with Diabetes; support groups for Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, stroke and bariatric surgery; individual medical nutrition counseling; breastfeeding resource center; and parents-to-be classes and support groups. In the community, health care providers are available in the Dr. J. Patrick Jarboe Mobile Health Center to address the primary care needs of the under-insured residents of St. Mary's. The charge for each patient visit is $15, and some Medicaid insurances are accepted. Health Enterprise Zone
MedStar St. Mary's serves as the lead for the Health Enterprise Zone in greater Lexington Park, also known as AccessHealth. The community coalition receives a range of incentives, benefits and grants to address and assist with healthcare access and health disparities. The care is supplemented with transportation via a van service along a 16-mile healthcare route, translator services, neighborhood wellness advocates, and care coordinators. MedStar Eye Physicians
MedStar Eye Physicians’ ophthalmologists are trained in the latest techniques — both medical and surgical — for diagnosing and treating a wide variety of disorders, conditions and injuries of the eye. The ophthalmologists are able to diagnose diseases of the eye such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataracts, and provide routine exams. MedStar St. Mary’s Outpatient Laboratory Centers
MedStar St. Mary's Hospital offers phlebotomy services at four locations in St. Mary’s County. Walk-ins are accepted for general blood testing. An appointment will be required for glucose tolerance tests, semen analysis and DNA testing.
