Highway marker unveiled

Del. Brian Crosby (D-St. Mary’s), left, Cynthia Miller of the Maryland Department of Commerce, County Commissioner President Randy Guy (R), Diana Bailey of the Maryland Women’s Heritage Center, Gen. Janeen Birckhead of the Maryland National Guard, Sen. Jack Bailey (R-St. Mary’s, Calvert), Elizabeth Hughes of the Maryland Historical Trust and St. Mary’s College of Maryland trustee Lawrence Leak gather Saturday morning for the unveiling of the Margaret Brent Pilgrimage highway marker. The display commemorates a 1915 journey by Maryland suffragists, who traveled by covered wagon from Baltimore to St. Mary’s City, the home of Margaret Brent, a landowner and attorney-in-fact for Lord Baltimore, who asked for a vote in the General Assembly in 1647.
