June marks the celebration of LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, and PFLAG of Leonardtown and Southern Maryland Area Secular Humanists are proud to be organizing a Drag Queen Story Hour at the Lexington Park library starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, as part of the local Pride celebration.

The Drag Queen Story Hour is just what it sounds like: A queen will be reading a fun and inclusive collection of stories to kids.

It is a creative and educational way to expose children to diversity and to encourage them to love and accept others, and themselves, as they are.

In the words of the founders of Drag Queen Story Hour, “drag questions the authority of gender norms, which can be very empowering for kids, especially for kids who don’t necessarily fit into rigid or prescribed gender roles where they may frequently find themselves.”

The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive and we are so grateful for the support and enthusiasm. The program will be broken in to age groups with story session for kids under 5, followed by a story session for kids over 5, and then a session for tweens and teens that will include a drag makeup tutorial. There will be fun activities for all ages of participants.

We hope to see you there, sporting your best glitter-filled, rainbow colored, fabulous pride outfit.
