The Society for the Restoration of Port Tobacco received the Preservation Project Award from the Charles County Board of Commissioners and the county’s Historic Preservation Commission on June 19, according to a press release.

The award was given to the society, the Town of Port Tobacco and contractor W. Lynn Garner for the Smokehouse restoration. Jullena Jones Shelley, a member of the society’s board of directors, was instrumental in bringing the Smokehouse renovation to fruition. She and Joyce Edelen worked tirelessly on the project, according to the press release.

The society thanks the board of directors, Ed and Nancy Bowling and Keech Edelen for designing the Smokehouse’s interior; Kevin Grote and David Lassman for their period skit on the Smokehouse history and use; and Mary Sandy from Port Tobacco Marina for supplying refreshments for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
