Maryland regional resources team, webpage launches

As part of a continuing effort to make Maryland state government faster and easier for businesses to navigate, Gov. Larry Hogan (R) announced the launch of the Maryland Regional Resources team and webpage. Comprised of the 10 state agencies that make up the Governor’s Commerce Subcabinet as well as the Governor’s Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, the team meets regularly to assist businesses and local jurisdictions with economic development efforts, including issues related to transportation, workforce development, licensing, planning and permitting, among others. The Maryland Regional Resources webpage, housed on the Maryland Business Express site, offer an easy-to-navigate state map with agency contacts for each region.

Making up the Governor’s Commerce Subcabinet is the Department of Assessments and Taxation, the Department of Commerce, the Department of the Environment, the Maryland Higher Education Commission, the Department of Housing and Community Development, the Department of Labor, the Department of Natural Resources, the Department of Planning, including the Office of Smart Growth, the Governor’s Office of Small, Minority and Women Business Affairs and the Department of Transportation.

Extension service offers food business training workshop

The University of Maryland Extension offers a launch-pad business training workshop, Food for Profit, for budding food entrepreneurs. Scaling a specialty food business into a sustainable, profitable business requires advanced training and technical mentoring in the areas of: regulations, hazard analysis and critical control points, record keeping, recall procedures, preventive controls, product development and testing, packaging and labeling and marketing.

In an effort to supply resources and training materials for established food business, a new section, Food for Profit 2, has been added to the Specialty Businesses modules of the Maryland Rural Enterprise Development Center, The site now offers lists of both private and public food processing videos, articles, contacts for industry support agencies and facilities and published training materials that support scaling up entrepreneurial food businesses.
